The Bible: What to know before reading the Bible

A Middle Eastern man pleaded guilty to charges that he was responsible for a string of bombings that killed 30 people and wounded 213 others from 1991 to 2000. He was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment in June 2002. For the next 6 years he was imprisoned on an Island and held under harsh conditions with other fundamentalists.

Knowing his life would soon be terminated he restored to studying the bible that was put by his bed side. He counted the number of chapters and verses. He took note of the shortest and longest chapters and verses. He realized that the bible was authored by forty people out of which only one is a gentile. He observed that the bible was written from three continents namely Africa, Asia, and Europe. He also learnt that it is the most translated book ever.

The gentleman wrote much of his Bible knowledge secretly in prison. The manuscript was smuggled out and was eventually completed and published in 2008. Later, he was moved to the maximum-security Prison on another Island where he was executed.

The message of the Bible

The bible is an exposition of the Ten Commandments and the Ten Commandments are an explanation of HOW TO “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind and Love your neighbor as you love yourself”. The bible therefore, is based on one word “Love”.

Literary, the words of the bible portray how much God loves us and how we ought to love him and others. That’s the mind you should have when reading the bible. Every place you open from Genesis to Revelation you will either see God’s expression of his love towards us or how God expects you to express your love to Him and to other people.

God’s love leads us to salvation

The Lord Jesus Christ said that, “God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 GNB)

If our executed Middle Eastern brother had seen God’s love leading him to deliverance and forgiveness of sin besides counting the number of chapters, verses, etc., he probably would have escaped execution. God does not take pleasure in the death of a sinner, he wants us all to be of a sound mind, healthy, and prosperous, and contributing to society positively.

When you recognize His love from the Bible and reciprocate by faith in His son Jesus Christ, He will surprise you with the multitude of His loving kindness.

Be blessed.
