Understanding our Relationship with Jesus Christ

November 24, 2009

The family of God is related to Jesus both by birth or adoption, and by marriage. You see God addresses himself as both a Father and Husband. This relationship is mysterious because truly you cannot be a Father and husband to your wife or a Father and Husband to your child at the same time. You are just either a Husband or a father period. Therefore what’s the mystery behind this relationship?

Christ as a Husband

Our relationship with Christ our husband puts these demands on Christ:

1. Christ is obliged to nourish and cherish us for we are one body with him for no man ever yet hated his own flesh (Ephesians 5:29)
2. Christ dwells with us according to knowledge for he understands that we are weaker vessels (1 Peter 3:7, Hebrews 4:15)
3. Christ is bound to us by law therefore he can never leave us nor forsake us (Romans 7:2)
4. Christ is committed to cleansing us by his word. That is, he makes things about us perfect through guidance by his word (Ephesians 5:25-27)
5. Christ has left His father by the Holy Spirit and dwells within and among us (Genesis 2:24)

Christ as a Father

Our relationship with Christ our father puts these demands on Christ:

1. Provision- (Matthew 7:11)
2. Protection-(Job 1:9-10)
3. Promotion-(Psalms 75:6)

This mysterious relationship portrays Christ’s total commitment to us. As a husband he sees us as one with himself and as a father he sees whom he adopted through his own blood. You see brethren Christ cannot deny you something because doing so would be equal to denying himself something and also to denying his own offspring that he labored for so hard to produce.
